Project Assurance Reviews provide a ‘short, sharp – moment in time’ view of how well a project is doing. The reviews are designed to provide constructive recommendations and ensure the project is given every opportunity for success. Reviews are carried out at key points during a project’s life and provide the project manager with the earliest indication of variation against plan together with an indication of remedial action to be taken or, reviews may be undertaken on behalf of project sponsors, owners or those with ‘political’ responsibility. The latter type of review often has a wider, more strategic remit and may focus on outcome over process.
The benefit of using an experienced independent review team, with expertise in implementation is that you get a fresh set of eyes and viewpoints, bringing fresh perspectives and identifying issues that internal teams will miss as they concentrate on the progress of day to day management. Additionally, benchmarking is included – along with the benefit and knowledge from a wide experience of international projects – certainly from a much wider range of domains and types than can be obtained internally.
Despite the best efforts of professional project managers, many public facing ICT projects across the world still fail to achieve their intended outcomes. Often the point is reached where the client must decide whether to continue to a compromised outcome or pull out completely and place their faith for investment recovery in the litigation process. The intended service benefit will not be delivered by either scenario and there is unlikely to be any Political appetite to start again.
